STAGS CAPTAINS DAY ALL OVER

Since Tony P was kind enough to publicise this event on the Goujon site, here's my official report on it.  A SPECIAL THANKS to those Goujonnaires [you know who you are!] who were unable to play but still stuck their hands in their pockets to make a most welcome donation.  Thanks to you and to those who took part.     John

STAGS CAPTAINS DAY 2nd JUNE 2008

There were 40 Stags playing in this annual event for charity, competing both for individual and team honours.  Despite the recent showery conditions, the weather was excellent and the course, whilst wet underfoot, was playing very well.  Aside from the golf competition itself, which was keenly fought, this was a “fun affair” with players allowed to wear an outrageous shirt for the game and for a token prize afterwards, following a parade on the patio.

The individual competition was played for the Bill Jones Trophy and was won by Martin Rennolds with 43 Stableford points.  Runner up, with 41 points on a back-nine countback, was John Wheeler and third placed, also with 41 points on a back-three countback, was Peter Miller.

The 4-man team prize was won by Tony Britton, Bernard Andrews, Jim Saxton and John Woodward with a total of 93 points on a back-nine countback.

Out of a dozen finalists, the player judged by the Lady Captain to be wearing the most outrageous shirt was Ces Dowson, though several other competitors complained that it was just “awful” rather than just “outrageous”.

Longest Drive was won by Martin Rennolds, Nearest-the-Pin was John Sidey and Longest-Putt-Sunk-on-the-18th was made by Paul Abbott.

Also winners were Roger G***ert [most shots into the water] and Peter Ch*****n [most no-scores on his card].

As a consequence of the competition, the raffle and donations to the day, the Stags were able to raise £250 for the Captain’s Charity.  This year the chosen good cause is Wooden Spoon, which is Rugby Football’s charity for disadvantaged children.

 Ces wins the Shirt Comp.

What a bunch!  The Shirt Comp finalists await the decision.

Martin Rennolds, a worthy winner of the Bill Jones Trophy for 2008.

TRIUMPH FOR PRATT HANDICAP CAMPAIGN

It's ironic that our Goujon Handicap Supremo, Tony Pratt, has been spending sleepless nights and chewing his fingernails fretting about his own official Club handicap.  "It's way too high and I can't seem to do anything about it!" he exclaims "No matter what I score it just stays the same" etc etc etc.

Well, at last, a succession of outrageous wins in the Goujon stakes has finally convinced Don "Hard-man" Hounslow to chop him a couple of strokes.  Well done, Tony, and now would you like to chop your Goujon handicap by an equal measure to give us all a chance??

Wilf trips Light Fantastic on Pond - 19th February 2008

Wilf Feeley was spotted standing on the bank of the pond on the 18th hole (the pond was frozen over at the time) hitting his ball off the ice.  Question is, is this allowed?  Isn’t he having an unfair advantage?  Can he pick and place?  Was he in the rough or was he on the fairway?

NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN

When it comes to statistics we all know the caveat about lies and damned lies.  However, what do you make of this?  Our chief reporter, Tony Pratt, in his results item for Friday 1st Feb, wondered whether 7 Birdies in a Goujon game with only 10 players was some kind of record.  Hot-shot Edwin Langdale also wondered whether his 3 Birdies in a single Goujon game was another record.  Well here's the deal on that ~ the answer is "Maybe, Possibly or No" inasmuch as the Birdie records only go back as far as early 2006 and it depends on which side of the argument you jump when deciding about the available statistics.

Here are the facts:

On 8th August 2006, 7 Birdies were shot but maybe more than 10 Goujonnaires were playing that day?  The Birdies fell to: Lewis 4th, Feely 7th & 12th, Saxton 7th, Langdale 3rd & 7th, Williams 7th.

On 27th March 2007, 7 Birdies again .  The Birdie potters were: Denny 2nd, Langdale 9th, Partridge 15th, Saxton 13th, Sidey 9th & 11th, Wilding 10th.

Turning to the individual player tallies, the situation could be a bit controversial.

On 20th January 2006, John Williams had 3 Birdies but we don't record which holes were involved or whether the course was in a "hybrid" state because of weather, thus putting the record into question.

On 16th October 2007, Don Hounslow scored 3 but only because an Eagle counts as a double-Birdie!  The holes were: Birdie 9th & Eagle 12th[Eagle ~ counts 2]

On 28th December 2007, John Sidey scored 3 but again there was an Eagle involved. The holes were: Eagle 12th & Birdie 13th.

SO THERE YOU HAVE IT!!
