Do we take ourselves a bit too seriously?

Being a Goujonnaire can have it's downside when other Stags watch in amazement at our complex rituals of scoring and chip consumption [to name but two] and make the odd comment.  From an outsider perspective we may seem a bit introspective.  Pause awhile and consider the actual interchange below between your editorial staff and a non-Goujon person both with their tongue firmly in cheek [I hope!] .

"Dear Bobby Duxbury,

Thank you for writing to Big Chief I-Spy with news of your interesting I-Spied observations on golfers pretending to be food items.  Unfortunately we cannot award you an I-Spy badge for seeing a Goujon and a Langoustine at Stoneleigh Deer Park.  However we invite you to visit the following website, www.goujon.org.uk , where you will find you have been enrolled as an honorary Goujonnaire for your persistence and endurance in hunting down and dealing with this matter.

If you have any [publishable] comments to send to the inner-quorum of the Goujonnaires, known as "The Unelected Ones", please drop me a line.

Happy hunting,

Yours,

Big Chief I-Spy"

"Dear Mister Woodworm

Your correspondence regarding the activities at Stoneleigh Deer Park causes me a certain amount of concern. I think you will find that I submitted substantiated evidence that in fact I had observed pieces of battered fish pretending to be golfers not the reverse as you imply.

True golfers, and I must admit I have seen very few at the aforementioned venue, have a book issued to them by an organization called the R & A which I understand does not mean Robin & Ann. This booklet has evolved over a great number of years and answers all questions regarding the circumstances, regulations and conditions under which the game of golf should be played and scores recorded. It beggars my belief that a group of senior men who should consider themselves lucky that they are looking at the grass from the more attractive side can find the time to reinvent the world and then restrict by membership those who are allowed to take benefit from the 'New World' rules.

The fact that I have been officially enrolled, be it only in a honorary position, in this 'World' of which I can only dream causes me to reconsider my future conduct whilst in the environs of the 'Reay Empire' and deep thought will be applied before any further utterances on the subject.

I must end with thanks to "The Unerected Ones" for bestowing this great honour, a position I will cherish, as you never know when you might gain an advantage by using different rules to the rest of the world.

Do I get a membership Card and Number?

Are ALL the members playing in the Medal Competition off the White Tees this week? {And putting their pound in the 'Over 70's' comp?}

Your & Mine

Bobindux "

It's tough being a Goujonnaire sometimes with so many distractions [Arrows Golf Soc, Stags Comps, The World Cup ~ whoops, shouldn't have mentioned the World Cup!] All the more creditworthy were those Goujons who supported our doyen member, Ces Dowson, in his annual trophy event for The Stags which was held on Monday 14th June.  And, how about this? - there were Goujons in both the winning and runner-up team.  John Sidey was in the second placed team and Don Hounslow was in the winning team which had an unheard-of total of 137 points [the "par" was 110]. Wow!

Here we see Ces presenting his magnificent trophy to the winners.  Don, second from right, was unapologetic about the handicap status of his team colleagues and I think most of the credit goes to his own brilliance on the day.

NOW, CAN WE HAVE A FULL TURNOUT ON TUESDAY 6th JULY FOR THE INAUGURAL SID JACKSON PAIRS CHALLENGE, IN MEMORY OF THE LATE SID JACKSON WHO DIED RECENTLY?  THE PRIZES, DONATED BY SID'S FAMILY WILL BE TREMENDOUS, SO PUT YOUR NAMES DOWN ON THE START-SHEET ASAP AND HELP MAKE IT A MEMORABLE DAY.

PS:  I WON'T TAKE "NO" FOR AN ANSWER.

There we were, thinking that the fabulous balmy weather might last another few weeks, when June came along and brought us down with a bump!  May was a great month for golf and there was much going on in the way of events.  Aside from Stags committee members past and present, there were very few Goujon takers for the Stags Captains Day or the Ladies & Stags day, both of which were superb.  But the Tuesday/Friday stuff was enjoyable as well.

In case we forget - the sun sometimes shines.

After being up most of the night watching the election news roll in, there was no way I could turn out for golf at 8 a.m. and I imagined that most of you would be similarly zonked out and boggle-eyed, so I was mighty surprised to see that there was an excellent Goujon turn-out anyway.  Such keenness!  Pity there is no such keenness for the News Page on our website.  Following numerous on-line warnings of an impending chop, with few signs that anyone was looking in, let alone caring, the NEWS PAGE has finally bitten the dust.  If you want up-to-the-minute Goujon news in future, you'll have to tune in to BBC News 24 or Sky.  Maybe the first item would be about the mediocre results for Goujons in the recent Stags Medal and Texas Scamble - though modesty forbids that I mention a 2nd place in the latter.

Those of you interested in progress towards the 2010 awards, may like to note that the "interim positions" at the end of March were:

Most Front wins. T Pratt 5
Most back wins. T Pratt, D Partridge, John Williams, 4

Most overall wins. T Pratt 5
Birdies Edwin 7 [unadjusted for handicaps]
Best Scores
Front. T. Pratt 20
Back. L Day 24
Overall. P. Cleary 40
Best Gross. E Langdale 84

Tony Pratt has now left, so it's all still to play for ........

After a couple of distinctly chilly days, has Spring finally sprung?  We hope so, but there were no hardy souls sitting out on the patio when Woodsider made a spot check in the afternoon.  Maybe they were hiding in the bar to escape possible deposits of volcanic ash from that Icelandic thing called Eyjafjallajökull [sounds like a heavy smoker clearing his throat - well maybe it's the Almighty clearing his].  Mind you, it's an ill-wind, even at 30,000 feet that blows no good and so it would seem from the feedback of the 99.8% of the population who are not plane spotters and enjoy a bit of respite from the roar of jet engines every few minutes.  Remember good old ThomsonFly [TUI actually] who used to use our 3rd fairway as a flight path?  Well count your blessings.

On Thursday, JS and I were besporting ourselves on the Par 3 and noted numerous filthy black smuts sticking to our [golf] balls on the putting greens.  Was this Icelandic fall-out?  Was this pollution from a renewed Airline invasion of the locale?  Or was it simply signs of a new and secret top-dressing formula?  The last option - we hope.

Wednesday 10th March 2010

It was very cold again but there are signs of Spring!

This was the picturesquely icy scene facing the brave [nay, foolhardy] Goujonnaires on March 2nd.  But what a difference a few days can make.

Last week, snow. This week, we have actually had some sunshine but will it last long enough to dry the course out?  Watch out for the snowdrops in the wood by the third tee: they will soon be gone for another year.

Those brave 14 who turned out for the first Goujon of March were not to be disappointed by the weather. Early ground frost gave way to bright sunshine and the wildlife was out in force. Woodsider was able to enter lots into his notebook.

For example: 4 Buzzards performing their Spring courtship circles above the clubhouse [or was it just joie de vivre?]. Numerous visiting grey-lag geese were sunbathing on the river bank by the 15th green and they outnumbered the local families of mute swans and their nearly mature cygnets as well as the canada geese so beloved by Edwin.  Greater spotted woodpeckers were drumming in the oaks and it was all interrupted by a fast flying vampire [mechanical version] escaped from Baginton airport.

On Wednesday 10th, Woodsider noticed a pair of nuthatches busy on the trees near the clubhouse - did they notice his abject shot off the tee and into the river?
